Two Cebuanos rank high in civil engineering exam

Two Cebuanos from Cebu Technological University (CTU) ranked high in the recently concluded Civil Engineering Licensure Exam.

Francisco Onde Jr. ranked second with 94.9 percent while Dovann Arrabis shares the 10th spot with Ryan Layug from Tarlac with a 93.05 percent average grade. Onde calls himself an average student.

He said his sheer dedication to study and attend review classes helped him a lot during the examination. Out of 4,289 who took the May 2014 Civil Engineering board examination only 1,862 passed the exam.

It was simultaneously held in the cities of Manila, Baguio, Cagayan de Oro, Cebu, Davao, Iloilo, Legazpi and Lucena.

“I was not expecting this,” said Onde, the fourth in a brood of seven in barangay Carreta, Cebu City.  After taking the board exam, he taught in Gillesania Engineering Review and Training Center in Cebu City.

Right now he is pre-occupied with teaching and has come to love the job. Arrabis,  who hails from Daanbantayan town, said it was his classmate who informed him that he topped in the exam.

He went to an Internet cafe in their neighborhood to confirm the text from his classmate. Arrabis said he was happy about his grade. He said what helped him the most was his active participation in quiz bowls representing the university.

Like Onde, Arrabis wants to teach and later take up a Masters Degree while experiencing field work. The two topnotchers just graduated at CTU last March 2014 and then took the exam last May./  Angeli Sarmiento, University of the Philippines Intern
