Cebuanos place 2nd, 10th in civil engineering board exam

Two Cebuano graduates of the Cebu Technological University (CTU) made it to the top 10 list of successful examiness who took the recent Civil Engineering Licensure Exam.

The results were released early this week.

Of the 4,289 who took the examination, only 1,862 passed. The exams were simultaneously held in the cities of Manila, Baguio, Cagayan de Oro, Cebu, Davao, Iloilo, Legazpi and Lucena.

Francisco Onde Jr. of barangay Carreta in Cebu City ranked second with 94.9 percent while Dovann Arrabis of Daanbantayan town shared the 10th spot with Ryan Layug of Tarlac with a 93.05 percent rating.

Describing himself as an average student, Onde said his sheer dedication to study and attend review classes helped him a lot. “I was not expecting this,” said Onde, the fourth in a brood of seven.

After taking the board exam, he took a teaching job at the Gillesania Engineering Review and Training Center in Cebu City. Onde said he is pre-occupied with teaching and has come to love the job.

Arrabis said it was his classmate who informed him that he landed in the top 10. He then went to an Internet cafe in their neighborhood to confirm the text message from his classmate.

Arrabis said he was happy about his grade. He said what helped him the most was his active participation in quiz contests in which he represented the university.

Like Onde, Arrabis wants to teach and later take up a masteral degree while doing field work.
