The Sunday Badminton Group (SBG) delivered on its promise of topnotch badminton action in its First Invitational Badminton Cup held at the Metrosports Badminton Club in Lahug last Saturday.
The tandem of Gina Aguilar and Jed Sumalinog led the roster of winners by winning the Supermix Category title after outlasting the pair of Cathy Sy O and EJ Arquillano, 7-21, 21-8, 21-14.
The winning pair struggled early resulting in their first set loss but rebounded in the succeeding sets with sharply angled drives and precise drop shots. An unforced error from O-Arquillano gave the Aguilar-Sumalinog the deciding set, 21-14 in a fitting end to SBG’s first foray into tournament handling.
“Despite slight delays due to double/triple entries, I believe the tournament was generally a success considering we were able to finish the entire event before the venue’s actual closing time,” said SBG’s technical officer Jed Sumalinog.
“Tournaments will always have room for improvement so we have taken note of the hitches and will address them to make the next SBG tournament exceed our current success,” Sumalinog promised. “We might organize another tournament, where participants are sure to get their time and money’s worth, two or three months from now,” added Bas Ouano, SBG’s promotions officer.
The winners of the other categories are; Men’s Level G: Jason Pesquera/Evander, Level F: Dante Francisco/Christian Tumulak, Level E: Gersam Lopez/Magnus Catelo, Women’s Level F: Heide Delica/Cleofe, Level E: Joan Francisco/Diane Angeles. /CORRESPONDENT Mark Tongco
