Let’s know these Archangels

Scriptures describe archangels as the most important angels who not only deliver the messages of God but also provide protection among his creation.

They serve a multitude of purposes.  Each archangel has a corresponding duty to fulfill to keep the balance among the Lord’s creations.

Let us get to know these archangels as we continue to embark on the lord’s sorrowful journey this Lent Season.

Archangel Michael

The name Michael means ‘he who is as God.’  He is considered as the angel of protection and the most powerful among angels.

Archangel Michael is depicted in scriptural artworks as the warrior, a leader within the angelic realm, and a patron angel of righteousness, mercy, and justice.

People who are confused, afraid and concerned for their safety come to him for help in releasing their fears and doubts and when making life-changing decisions.

Archangel Raphael

Archangel Raphael’s name means ‘God heals.’  He is the one tasked to provide physical and emotional healing.

According to vocabulary.com, and an online dictionary tool, his name was derived from the Hebrew word ‘rophe’ which means ‘to heal.’

But this angel does not only heal. He also provides assistance to those who are in the medical field.

The book of Tobit identified Raphael was the angel who healed the earth when it was filled with sins brought about by fallen angels.

Archangel Gabriel

We know Angel Gabriel as the angel who delivered God’s plans to Mary, the vessel of human salvation through Jesus.

Archangel Gabriel is often portrayed as the angel who is holding a trumpet and is the only female archangel, according to Catholic Online.

The messenger angel’s name means “God is my strength.”

Archangel Barachiel

Barachel is an angel known to provide blessings to those who ask for his intercession.

Archangel Barachiel’s name means “God’s blessing.”   He is oftentimes depicted in a feminine form which emphasizes his nurturing work which includes the delivery of blessings to those who are in need.

According to the book of Tobit, Barachiel is among the angels who guard God’s throne. He also worked with humans when Adam and Eve bore their fruits into the world.

Archangel Jehudiel

His name is oftentimes spelled as Jehudiel which means the ‘one who glorifies the Lord.’   He is the angel who brings wisdom and strength to those who ask for his blessing.

In the old testament, the apocalyptic book of Tobit (Tobit 12:15) describes Judiel as the angel who “is ever ready to enter the presence of the glory of the Lord.”

Archangel Ariel

Archangel Ariel’s name means “the lion of God.”

His role is to protect God’s creation and maintain the balance of life, which is why he is often painted with a green light that shines behind his wings.

As the angel of nature, Ariel serves as the patron angel of animals.

Some Christians ask his intercession especially for those who are about to embark on new beginnings and endeavors in life.

Archangel Uriel

Angel Uriel is categorized by Catholics as the angel of wisdom or the angel of truth.

Uriel which means “God is my light” or “the fire of God” brings light to those who are confused and in a dark situation.

According to scriptures, Uriel was described as one of the seven archangels who presided the world and was the angel who warned Noah about the upcoming flood.

Being the angel of wisdom, Uriel helps take away the anguish, anxiety, and anger that prevent Christians from believing in the word of God.
