City Council wants to get zoo’s ‘wish list’

Cebu City Vice Mayor Edgardo Labella said the City Council will summon the head of the city’s zoo to discuss what needs to be done to improve the city-run facility.

“We know that what they have is never enough. The council will support their needs,” he said.

Labella said they will ask zoo manager Giovanni Romarate for their “wish list” to enable the council to assess which ones could be delivered in the next budgetting process.

The People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals had earlier noted that the zoo needs to improve its present facilities to make the zoo “animal-friendly” taking into consideration the mental and physical needs of the animals presently housed in the facility in barangay Lahug.

Romarate listed down the items the zoo needed in his 2014 budget proposal but Labella said the budget proposal was sent to the mayor’s office for consideration.

Labella said the city government also wants to settle the ownership of the property where the city zoo sits as they don’t want the improvements to go to waste.
