Five children die in Leyte ‘tent city’ fire

MANILA, Philippines—Five children died in a fire that engulfed a temporary shelter in the typhoon-hit Tacloban City in Leyte before dawn Wednesday.

Fire Senior Superintendent Pablo Cordeta, Eastern Visayas regional director of the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP), said in an interview with Radyo Inquirer 990 AM that five children aged 12 and younger perished in the fire that started at 12:30 a.m.

‎Media reports said that the tent housing the children was located in Barangay (village) Brava Costa in San Jose, Tacloban City.

The children were of ages 12 years, nine years, five years, three years, and four months.
