USC labor row ends in settlement

DISMISSED workers of the University of San Carlos (USC) Talamban campus who staged a demonstration last month have agreed to avail of the early retirement package offered by the school administration.

The settlement was signed last Friday by the USC management and the 12 personnel of the university’s General Services Office.

The dismissed workers were still given an early retirement compensation equivalent to one month salary per year of service plus 10 months worth of salary despite entering the settlement 13 days after May 31 deadline for the offer.

The minimum required by law is one-half month salary for every year of service.

“Not only that, the USC agreed to continue to provide scholarship to five (5) children of former GSO employees — namely: Jane Marie Bongo, Jona Clarez Bongo, Ciara Hannah Cabo, Nerissa Mingo and Sherylyne Leyson — subject to policies covered by the program,” the USC said in a press statement.

The resolution came on the heels of USC filing an injunction case with prayer for a temporary restraining order against the striking workers following documented harassment made on some students, their parents, school personnel and visitors by the strikers and outsiders supporting them.

With the settlement last Friday, USC opted not to file the case, said USC publicist Cerwin Eviota.
