Cell site towers don’t cause cancer, health official says

The radio frequency waves received and transmitted by cell site towers don’t cause cancer, a health official said today.

During the public hearing held by the Cebu City Council, Dr. Agnet Peralta of the Department of Health (DOH) said “the radiation coming from cellsites are classified as non-ionizing radiation and doesn’t cause cancer.”

“There is no proven study that radio frequency waves from cell sites indeed cause cancer,” she said.

Residents in sitio Calvary Hills in barangay Apas, Cebu City called on the Cebu City government to have the two cell towers in their area taken down for health reasons.

They said nearly 20 people in their area got sick of cancer.

They said the only noticeable effect of the presence of cellsites nearby is an increase in body heat. Globe Telecom has about 100 cellsites built in Cebu City including that in Calvary Hills in barangay Apas.
