The two men who were arrested for selling 11 wild birds, including endangered hawk-eagles and cockatoos, in Talisay City last week will face trial for violating Republic Act 9147 or the Wildlife Resources Conservation and Protection Act.
The Department of Environment and Natural Resouces (DENR) filed a complaint against Stephen Ng Sy, 34 and Alberto Primor, 27.
They both waived a preliminary investigation.
The Talisay City Prosecutor’s Office recommended bail of P60,000 each for the vendors in charges elevated to the Regional Trial Court.
Provincial Security Officer Loy Anthony Madrigal, who also heads the province’s environment task force, clarified that they seized 11 birds from the two respondents.
Madrigal posed as a buyer during the operation that led to the arrest of the two men.
One of the birds—a Philippine Hawk Eagle—succumbed to stress and died in its cage last Sunday. The birds seized last Friday were believed to have come from Mindanao.
