Miriam’s new battle

I was one of those who was shocked to learn that the feisty senator from the province of Iloilo, Miriam Defensor Santiago is suffering from the debilitating illness of stage 4 cancer of the lungs.
But I was amazed by how she broke the news to the public, saying that she was so “excited” by her affliction.

Seriously, I am praying that the Lord will give her the strength to overcome this health crisis.
My mother died of pancreatic cancer. We were devastated when lost the battle and cancer eventually took her life. I think the best thing we can do for Senator Santiago is to pray for her and her family.

To Senator Santiago: Keep up the good work that you started, especially your fight against graft and corruption. We in turn will continue to dou our share in the fight that you started in the Senate.

Finally, the battle against those who participated in the pork barrel scam is yielding positive results. Senators Ramon “Bong” Revilla Jr, Jose “Jinggoy” Estrada and Juan Ponce Enrile are detained after the Sandiganbayan issued warrants for their arrest.

But the people’s struggle is far from over because we still have to determine the mastermind of the scam and jail the Cabinet members and other parties involved.

This is going to be a long legal battle. We expect delays and legal maneuvers of lawyers but let us not give up. Let us patiently keep watch over the proceedings until all those involved are investigated.

For ordinary citizens like me, it is horrendous to see how the people’s money is being stolen by government officials vested with our trust.

I demand that the government refuse special treatment for them. They should be treated like ordinary inmates regardless of their positions in government.

Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama is getting mixed reactions for what he has done to solve the traffic problem in the Banilad-Talamban road.

But I guess criticism comes with the turf and was expected after years of letting drivers ply their route and getting their way on the road.

The mayor’s imposition of the “no left turn” policy was too sudden for many drivers . But he was right in saying that he would not entertain any complaint, only suggestions so that we can move forward and arrive at a concrete and workable solution to the problem.

The mayor is holding us, the road users, partly responsible for the Ban-Tal corridor. It’s best that we plan our day especially when we have to drive through it. Let us sacrifice a little for the good of all.

Gone are the days when we can just have our way in using the road.

The issue of the taped baby at the Cebu Puericulture Center and Maternity House, Inc., has become more puzzling after the mother allegedly received money from the hospital but denied doing so.

The hospital showed a receipt for the amount as part of the amicable settlement but the mother says the signature on it was not hers.

We hope that finally, the case will reach its conclusion with justice dispensed in favor of the children whose mouths were taped.
