Interior Secretary Mar Roxas will arrive in Cebu today to attend activities organized by various agencies for disaster preparedness.
His first stop will be at the Waterfront Hotel in barangay Lahug in Cebu City where he will address a gathering of the League of Municipalities of the Philippines (LMP).
Roxas will be the main speaker of the event, said Shem Quezon, the DILG chief’s media relations officer.
Agenda
The main agenda for the mayor’s meeting will be the establishment of permanent disaster offices in each town as required under Republic Act 10121 or the Philippines Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Act of 2010.
The law made the Local Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (LDRRMOs) a permanent department in all municipalities, with regular staff. Before RA10121, the disaster body only functioned in times of calamities and disasters. These offices will now be instituting measures to mitigate natural calamities.
In the afternoon, Roxas will be the guest speaker at the symposium on disaster preparedness organized by the National Youth Commission.
The event is expected to fill the Cebu Coliseum with students from various schools in Cebu City.
President Aquino declared July as National Disaster Consciousness Month under Executive Order No. 137 “to heighten public awareness on the importance of disaster prevention, mitigation and preparedness.”
