Strong winds and heavy rains hit the northern towns of Cebu as typhoon Glenda headed to Manila from from east of Catarman in northern Samar where it was located at speeds of 24 kph at 10 a.m., Tuesday.
The state weather bureau Pagasa hoisted Signal No. 1 over Cebu City, Cebu province and Camotes group of islands. Pagasa’s Mactan office asked local government units in northern Cebu to take necessary precautions and evacuate communities at risk of floods and landslides.
Oscar Tabada of Pagasa said local officials are advised to monitor coastal communities due to the risk of high tides and storm surges.
Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama has ordered the suspension of afternoon classes in all public elementary and high schools in the city due to incessant rains and advised private school administrators to consider the same.
The Philippine Coast Guard cancelled all trips of vessels docked in Cebu bound to Ormoc, Calbayog, Masbate, Hilongos, Leyte.
No vessels are also allowed to sail in the ports of Naga and Hagnaya. More than 600 passengers were affected in the cancellation of trips.
In Kawit, Medellin, strong winds caused a motorized banca to capsize this morning. No one was hurt.
Rodolfo Villajuan, Coast Guard station commander said all fishermen are advised not to sail to avoid sea mishaps.
