LAPU-LAPU CITY, Philippines –The Mactan-Cebu International Airport (MCIA) has only recorded a ‘very low’ 2.7 million combined passenger traffic in 2020 for both domestic and international travel.

This was confirmed by Aines Librodo, GMR-Megawide Cebu Airport Corporation (GMCAC) head for Airline Marketing.

Librodo said that the 1.9 million domestic travel traffic is very low, compared to the 8.4 million passenger traffic for 2019.

“It’s really low kasi ang normal namin in 2019 we have 8.4 million domestic passengers. Last year or 2020, it’s really very low,” Librodo said.

For international passengers, Librodo said that the airport’s passenger traffic only reached 800,000 passengers, which is also very low compared to the 4.3 million passengers in 2019.

Librodo said that he is hoping that the Inter-Agency Task Force (IATF) on the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases would already relax its policy for domestic passengers traveling within the country, to bring back the vibrance of the travel and tourism industry in the Philippines.

She said that other countries in Southeast Asia were no longer that strict in their policies for domestic travel. /rcg
