Cebu groups call on VP Leni to run for President in 2022

Vice President Leni Robredo’s supporters in Cebu wear lavender ribbons as a sign of support for her candidacy should she decide to run for the country’s highest post in 2022. 

CEBU CITY, Philippines — A coalition of cause-oriented groups in Cebu City have joined together to appeal to Vice President Maria Leonor “Leni” Robredo to run for president in 2022.

Representatives of groups belonging to the Cebu Citizens’ Assembly (CCA) gathered at Cebu City on Tuesday, February 9, 2021, to share their hopes for the vice president to take the challenge of running for the country’s top executive in the next elections.

As the election draws near, Robredo has not yet signified any plans to run as the next President of which her supporters are eager for her to do.

“Akbayan Women supports VP Leni Robredo in her presidential candidacy this coming 2022 elections. Since VP Leni has taken her office, she has remained true to her word that she will be of help to the marginalized women,” said Akbayan Cebu.

The urban poor sector also sought for the vice president to run trusting that she will find solutions to the various “social injustices, they have experienced over the past years as collateral damage to the war on drugs and as the most affected sector of the economic recession due to the pandemic.

The Silent Majority group has appealed to Robredo to run for president as well saying there are Cebuanos clamoring for her to take the top seat of the government.

“Alam naming hindi mo kami iiwanan at hindi ka namin bibitawan,” said the group.

The Liberal Party (LP) Cebu expressed support to Robredo should she decide to run for the presidency and assured her that the party in Cebu will be behind her back and her campaign.

At least 12 cause-oriented groups joined the CCA to write a joint letter of support to Robredo for her candidacy.

The CCA said they will send the letters to the Office of the Vice President on February 10, 2021, either through email or courier.

As a sign of unity, the groups also wore lavender ribbons to signify their support to Robredo. /rcg
