CEBU CITY, Philippines – Talisay City Mayor Gerald Anthony “Samsam” Gullas has been infected with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19).

Gullas disclosed on his official Facebook page on Wednesday, February 10, that he recently tested positive for the infection.

“I’m sad to inform all of you that I have been confirmed to be positive of COVID-19,” said Gullas.

He is the eighth local chief executive in Cebu confirmed to have been afflicted with the disease, based on a tally made by local reporters.

Gullas said he has voluntarily placed himself under quarantine and isolation since Tuesday, February 9, after experiencing symptoms of COVID-19.

“I asked our city health officials to have me swabbed,” said Gullas.

“The whole week last week, the weekend and on Monday I did not have any symptoms, but Tuesday morning (February 9), they started to show,” he added.

The mayor said he received information on Wednesday that his swab samples tested positive for the virus.

In the meantime, Gullas assured his constituents that his temporary absence will not hamper the delivery of basic services in the city.

He also asked for prayers for his speedy recovery.

“Hopefully, I can fully recover from this as we still have more work to be done. Please pray that I can recover fully from this experience. Salamat daan sa inyong pag ampo,” said Gullas.
