LAPU-LAPU CITY, Philippines – President Rodrigo Duterte will be attending the 500th anniversary of the Victory at Mactan on April 27, 2021.

This was confirmed by Lapu-Lapu City Mayor Junard “Ahong” Chan, wherein the activity would be held at the Liberty Shrine in Barangay Mactan.

Due to this, Chan said that they will be limiting the number of spectators to 50-100 who would be attending the activity.

Chan said that this is to ensure that the social distancing protocol will still be observed, and for the security of the president.

The activity will highlight the reenactment of the Battle of Mactan, wherein Datu Lapulapu defeated the Spaniards led by Ferdinand Magellan.

“Ang atong pagpangandam anang adlaw, since naa siya, we have the reenactment nga pagahimoon. But ato lang i-limit ang tawo sa maong area sa Mactan Shrine. Probably around 50-100 lang ang atong i-allow or less than 50%,” Chan said.

Due to this, Chan urged Oponganons to just stay at home during the said event, since the activity can still be viewed online.

Aside from the reenactment, the city has also prepared several activities on that date.

“On the day of the celebration dunay gala and cultural show, fireworks display, and drone display,” he added.

Chan, however, said that the Malacañang has not given them yet the exact time for the arrival of the president.

He also added that the start of the reenactment will depend on the time of the president’s arrival.

“Magdepende pod ta kun unsang orasa motaas ang tubig sa dagat,” he said.

Aside from the president, Chan said that senators Bong Go, Sonny Angara, and Imee Marcos have also confirmed their attendance in the activity, among others./rcg
