CEBU CITY, Philippines — Heavy rains experienced in northern Cebu on Sunday afternoon, February 14, resulted in minor floodings in low-lying areas in Danao City.

Roland Reyes, head of the Danao City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO), confirmed to CDN Digital in a phone interview that thigh-level floodwaters were reported in barangays Sabang and Tuburan Sur.

Reyes said the city recorded 64 millimeters of rain that was poured within a span of one hour on Sunday afternoon.

“Downpour of more than 50 millimeters will really result in floods in our low-lying areas. These two barangays also happened to be low-lying areas,” Reyes said in Cebuano.

While there were no residents evacuated, Danao City’s DRRMO top official said they assisted dozens of individuals who had difficulties crossing between Barangays Sabang and Tuburan Sur.

“These two barangays just sat next to each other. We deployed heavy equipment such as dump trucks to help ferry stranded individuals,” he explained.MuIn the meantime, rescue and disaster personnel of Danao City have informed residents in flood-prone and landslide-prone areas to prepare in the event that an evacuation is needed.

Danao City is a third-class city located approximately 48 kilometers north of Cebu City.

The state weather bureau on Sunday has also issued several thunderstorms and heavy rainfall advisories in several parts of Cebu.

This is due to the presence of a weather disturbance — a tail-end of a frontal system — that brought cloudy skies with rains in the entire Visayas region. /dbs
