CEBU CITY, Philippines—As the season of Lent began, Cebu Archbishop Jose Palma reminded devotees here of its real essence and tradition.

Palma officiated a virtual Ash Wednesday Mass last February 17, 2021, which was attended only by ministers from the Archbishop’s Residence.

In his Homily, Palma urged Cebuano faithfuls to continue practicing the essence of Lent.

“This Lenten season, as much as possible, should be part of our everyday life. And then fasting, to remind ourselves the control of oneself, and discipline of ourselves. And thanksgiving, to express gratefulness, give appreciation,” he said in Cebuano.

The prelate also reminded devotees to always give value in life so they could help others.

“Our lives, we often perceive it as gift of love from God. To thank God of this wonderful gift, what better way to do it but to always remember its value,” explained Palma.

The Archdiocese of Cebu, earlier this month, released a set of guidelines for parishes in conducting Ash Wednesday celebration, which marks the start of Lenten Season.

Due to the continuing threats of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) and prevailing quarantine restrictions, sprinkling of ashes over the head instead of directly dabbing on the forehead was recommended.

In Roman Catholicism, Ash Wednesday marks the start of the lenten season in the liturgical calendar – which is a season of fasting and praying.
