CEBU CITY, Philippines — An escapee of the Mambaling Police Station was killed after he engaged pursuing policemen in a shootout at 11:30 p.m. on Thursday night, February 18 in Sitio CYO, Barangay Poblacion Pardo, Cebu City.

Police identified the slain escapee as Alwin Cereño who has pending cases for robbery, and possession of firearms and explosives.

Cereño was also tagged as the suspect in the killing of Police Senior Master Sergeant Maximino Macua Jr., during an anti-drug operation last year in Barangay Mambaling, Cebu City.

During his visit to the Police Regional Office (PRO)-7, Police General Debold Sinas, PNP Chief, confirmed that Cereño was indeed the suspect in the killing of Macua.

Cereño escaped from his guards while he was being transported back to the Mambaling Police Station after undergoing a medical checkup.

The suspect reportedly kicked the driver of the vehicle and when the vehicle stopped the suspect reportedly jumped off and escaped.

At around 11:30 p.m. on the same day, authorities and agents from the Regional Intelligence Division (RID)-7 conducted a manhunt operation.

When authorities located Cereño the latter reportedly engaged them in an armed encounter resulting in his death.

The shootout also injured one policeman identified as PSSG Chuby Caloscos of the Regional Drug Enforcement Unit (RDEU), who was reportedly hit in the left leg.

In a phone interview with the reporters,  Police Lt. Colonel Wilbert Parilla, Deputy City Director for Operations of CCPO, said that Cereño was also the suspect in several robbery incidents outside Cebu City including the one committed at a gasoline station in Naga City.

Parilla also revealed that the suspect would use several aliases to hide his whereabouts.

“Gausab-usab man gud ni syag ngalan, bisan unsa nalang ni ngalan iyang dal-on,para dili ni sya ma trace iyang previous records,” Parilla stated. (He was using different names so that he will not be traced). /rcg
