Jealous man hacks wife to death in Toledo City, Cebu

CEBU CITY, Philippines – Intense jealousy drove a man to hack his wife to death before shocked onlookers around noon today, March 9, 2021, in Sitio Luray 1, Barangay Poblacion, Toledo City in southwest Cebu.

Police identified the victim as Marilyn Caburnay, 40, who succumbed to multiple hack wounds inflicted by her 55-year-old husband, Gerardo Caburnay.

The couple had four children.

According to the police, before the hacking incident, the suspect first checked in at a lodging house in the said city early morning of Tuesday then invited his wife over. Once they were inside the room, investigators said a commotion was heard.

Witnesses then saw a wounded Marilyn running out of the room being chased by Gerardo who was armed with a big bolo used to chop wood.

When Gerardo caught up with Marilyn by the roadside, he repeatedly hacked his wife until she slumped on the pavement blooded just a few meters from the lodging house.

Personnel from the Toledo City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office (DRRMO) brought Marilyn to the Toledo City Hospital where she was pronounced dead.

Marilyn died due to multiple hack wounds including a gaping wound on her neck which medics believed caused her death.

Police Lieutenant Colonel Junnel Caadlawon, chief of police of the Toledo Police Station disclosed that the couple had been quarreling for months due to Gerardo’s jealousy. Gerardo believed that Marilyn was having an affair with another man.

The suspect is currently detained at the Toledo Police Station awaiting appropriate charges to be filed against him. /rcg
