CEBU CITY, Philippines— Internal medicine.

This is where Cy Johann Kent Romuga, 26, wants to focus on for the next year, after his sweet achievement of finishing third in the March 2021 Physician Licensure Examination.

The Bohol native found his new home in Cebu eight years ago to study for his pre-medicine course which was medical technology at Cebu Doctor’s University, which also led him to pursue his med studies at the University of Cebu College of Medicine Foundation, Inc, Mandaue.

Studying in advance before the board exams for seven to eleven hours a day helped Romuga to achieve his goal, to pass the board exams and to pass it with flying colors.

“I just studied four to five months in advance with a minimum of 7 up to 11 hours per day, reading books and whatever study materials and examinations you can get from the review center,” he said.

But even with this dedication, when the exam days came, Romuga didn’t feel prepared at all.

“Come exam time, I didn’t feel prepared at all on some subjects. There was no way to feel prepared when medicine books have at an average 2000 pages per subject (easier ones have 1000 while some others have 3500+ pages which is impossible [to take in all at the same time]) and some subjects have more than 1 reference book,” he added.

Romuga chose to rise above the occasion knowing that the man above is with him all the way.

“I just put a lot of my trust in myself and a lot of faith in the Lord and voilà,” added Romuga.

Now, Romuga has set his eyes on a new adventure and that is residency.

He plans to have his residency training in Internal Medicine in one of the hospitals in Manila by the near end of the year or maybe next year.

“Then perhaps afterward sub-specialize in something lucrative and interesting like Endocrinology or Immunology, but who knows where my drive will take me,” said Romuga.

With the right determination, focus and faith, nothing can stand in the way of achieving your dreams, even with the ongoing pandemic. /dbs
