Dumanjug, Cebu — Solving a Rubik’s Cube is a fun and challenging mental game.
But Mel Ann Shane Lauron, 19, from Daanbantayan town, northern Cebu, wanted to do more with the colorful cube.
So, she came up with the idea to use the puzzle cube as a medium for her artwork.
“I came across this Italian artist who made a mosaic with Rubik’s Cube and I was super inspired,” she told CDN Digital.

Since then, she became interested in making portraits using the Rubik’s Cube. She did some research and then trained herself on how to execute it.
According to Lauron, she spends two hours on every portrait she makes. Solving and navigating the complexity of the cube’s pattern makes it more challenging.
She uses pixelated images as a reference for her portraits. Then she solves and arranges 273 cubes for every portrait she creates.
Lauron is also fond of making portraits using cardboard crafting and banana leaves.
“Sakit sa kamot and makakutaw sa utok,” she says.
(It’s painful to the hands and really mind boggling.)
While making the artwork was difficult, finding the cubes to use was even more challenging.
“How I managed to learn how to do the mosaic with Rubik’s Cube was easier than finding Rubik’s Cubes. It cost me a lot of time and it was a pain in the pocket as the total expense for my art is almost P20,000,” she said.
