Chess: Toledo battles San Juan in PCAP All Filipino Conference

CEBU CITY, Philippines—The Cordova Dutchess Dagami Warriors dislodged erstwhile south division standings leader Camarines Soaring Eagles by winning all their matches in the online chess action of the Professional Chess Association of the Philippines (PCAP) Wesley So Cup Conference last Saturday, June 19, 2021.

The Dutchess Dagami Warriors defeated Pasig City King Pirates, 13-8, and the Olongapo Rainbow Team 7, 17.5-3.5.

Meanwhile, the Soaring Eagles lost all their matches versus the Laguna Heroes and the Manila Indios, which paved the way for the Dagami Warriors to retake the lead in the standings by improving to 17 wins with two defeats.

The Soaring Eagles, which took the lead in the south division standings for quite a while, dropped to second place with a 15-4 (win-loss) card.

After missing several games, Israeli Grand Master (GM) Nitzan Steinberg returned to action to help the Dagami Warriors win all  matches versus the King Pirates in the rapid and blitz rounds.

The Toledo City Trojans also edged all of their opponents last Saturday. They bested the Isabela Knight Raiders, 11-10, and the Cavite Spartans,14.5-6.5.

They are now at fourth place in the standings with a 13-6 record behind the Iloilo Kisela Knights, which has a 14-5 card.

Meanwhile, the Lapu-Lapu Naki Warriors and the Cebu City Machers split their two matches.

The Naki Warriors lost to the San Juan Predators, 4-17, but bounced back to grab a win versus the Rizal Batch Towers, 12-9.

The Machers beat Olongapo, 12.5-8.5, but bowed down to the Manila Indios, 4.5-16.5, in their second match.

The Naki Warriors are in seventh place in the standings with a 7-12 record, while the Machers are behind them with a 6-13 card.
