Cebuanos will attempt to break India’s record for having the largest Zumba class in the world on Oct. 18.

The Zumba Instructors Network (ZIN) of Cebu and World Vision are targeting at least 20,000 participants from the academe, private sector and barangays in Cebu City and the towns and cities in Cebu province for the 30 minute dance.

“We are also helping improve children’s lives,” Pamela Milora of World Vision said.

Part of the proceeds from the P250 registration fee for the “World Zumba Class” will be spent for the rehabilitation of public schools in northern Cebu that were damaged by super typhoon Yolanda.

ZIN of Cebu, World Vision and Livehouse Productions formally launched the World Zumba Class in a two-hour gathering held at the Waterfront Hotel in Lahug yesterday afternoon.

Record holder

Instructors gave their guests a demonstration of what dancing Zumba is like.

Organizers are also tapping the assistance of the Department of Tourism and the Cebu Provincial and the Cebu City governments to make sure they would achieve their 20,000 target participants.

India is now the current Guinness record holder for the largest Zumba class in the world with 6,671 participants during a Zumba class held on Sept. 15, 2012.

Las Vegas tried to break India’s record in May 2014 but fell short by 400 participants.

Cebu will try its luck on Oct. 18 at the North Parking area of SM Mall.

Fitness

Lita Quisumbing of ZIN of Cebu said landing in the Guinness Book of World Records would bring Cebu to the world map.

Organizing the biggest World Zumba Class is also their means of sharing to the Cebuanos the passion, fitness and fun that they would get from dancing Zumba.

“We want to start promoting healthy and active lifestyle,” she said.

Bobot Ramos of Livehouse Productions said winning the Guinness World Record for the largest Zumba class is an added feather to the caps of Cebuanos.

Cebu already won Guinness World Record honors for the longest barbecue, largest chess tournament, most number of rackets launched under a minute and the largest dance class.

Ramos said they are opening a registration booth at the SM Sports Atrium (formerly the PAL office) starting on Aug. 15 to entertain inquiries and registration of interested participants of the World Zumba Class.

He said they will be collecting registration fee to also make funds available for their preparations and the travel expenses of Guinness adjudicators from the United Kingdom to Cebu to document their World Zumba Class.

Ramos said they are paying 7,000 British pounds or about P0.5 million to bring Guinness adjudicators to Cebu. /WITH CORRESPONDENT GLENDALE G. ROSAL
