LAPU-LAPU CITY, Philippines- The Lapu-Lapu City Government will hire 160 nurses that will be deployed to different hospitals in the city.

Lapu-Lapu City Mayor Junard “Ahong” Chan said that these nurses will be assigned at Lapu-Lapu City Hospital in Barangay Gun-ob, Mactan Doctors Hospital in Barangay Basak, and ARC Hospital in Barangay Agus as the city plans to open more Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) beds.

Chan said that they are eying to open 80 COVID-19 beds, to cater to those who would manifest severe and critical symptoms of the virus, as the city’s COVID-19 cases continue to rise.

The mayor said that currently, the hospitals in the city are already at their full capacity.

“We need to expand our hospitals. Mao na atong gitan-aw pila ka capacity bed atong madungag. Ang ato lang kay kuwang gihapon ta ug health personnel mao nang we are hiring nurses for our additional beds,” Chan said.

Chan added that the hiring of these nurses will be coursed through the Department of Health (DOH), while the city will pay for their salaries.

The mayor is hoping that the hiring process will be done immediately, especially with the presence of the Delta variant that is considered more transmissible compared to other variants of the virus.

“Actually, naa natay mga nurses nga mga local nato nga na-hire, aside from the DOH, and we also have volunteers. But ang atoa, i-assign gyud nato sa hospital,” he added.    /rcg
