Damn Cable Car Rice

1992
He drove a Ninja in school, a sexy vehicle. We’d fall into our little conversations, and I fell for that naughty grin. One weekend, he invited me out, with a bunch of his friends—a rare breed of Makati natives—born and raised, the first I’ve ever heard of that.

Of course, we ended up at the long bar of his favorite watering hole with an unmistakably San Francisco vibe, a nod to the city’s famous public conveyance. “I want you to try the sisig rice. You’ll come back.” We did, and I did. Eventually, society did its number on us, and we drifted like continents…slowly, but definitely apart.

You and that smile, lighting up the darkly-stained wood in the room, Cable Car finally in Cebu. And our conversations, with or without alcohol, are the boon to my days, and the bane of my existence in your absence. “If you were a straight woman, where would you be right now?” I ask him to surmise, since he knows me rather well. The answer is unexpected, but marked with a raw honesty that has marked this friendship from the start. We pick through, yes, sisig rice, and a platter of that other staple, Cable Car rice. I over-order, as usual. We eat and squabble and laugh and gawk, as I wait for the continental drift. And praying that with this one, it won’t come.
