First meningo victim in Cebu dies at Vicente Sotto hospital

Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center

A man died of meningocccemia at the Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center (VSMMC), the regional Department of Health office said today.

The male victim from Danao City was first admitted to the Danao City Provincial Hospital last Aug. 15 but when doctors suspected that he had meningocccemia they transferred him to the VSMMC.

He died the following day.

Dr. Rennan Cimafranca of Regional Epidemiology and Surveillance Unit in Central Visayas said the victim experienced symptoms of meningocccemia such as fever, vomiting, rashes and slurred speech because his brain was affected by the virus.

Cimafranca said he is the first confirmed meningocccemia case. He was buried immediately. Cimafranca said the victim didn’t have a history of travel abroad and believed that the virus is just within the locality.

He asked family members, and anyone to have themselves checked if they experience signs of the virus so that medications can be given immediately.

Meningococcemia is an acute and potentially life-threatening infection of the bloodstream caused by the bacteria called Neisseria meningitidis. The virus lives in a person’s upper respiratory tract without causing visible signs of illness and cab be spread from person to person since the virus is air borne.
