Evening fire displaces 108 residents in Lapu

About 24 families or 108 persons were displaced by a fire that destroyed 16 houses despite heavy rain in sitio Kawot, barangay Bankal, Lapu-Lapu City last Wednesday evening.

SFO3 Jovani Dañosos of the Lapu-Lapu City Fire Department said the fire originated from the home of Melvin Sinangote.

The 24 families are housed in the barangay hall and attended to by the city’s social welfare personnel. Dañosos said a short circuit in the service drop line of Sinangote’s home sparked the fire which spread to neighboring houses made mostly of light materials.

“Wala gyud naluwas nga butang kay dali kaayo mikatap ang kayo (there was nothing we have saved as the fire spread immediately),” Sinangote said.

Lapu-Lapu City firefighters put out the fire at past 8:30 p.m. Damage was pegged at P200,000.

Barangay Bankal chairperson said Mario Inot said the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) is still listing the names of the victims who will receive assistance from the Lapu-Lapu City government.
