Lady Troopers look to oust Rising Suns today

The Army Lady Troopers set their sights on a series sweep and the title when they battle the reigning champions Cagayan Valley Rising Suns in Game Two of the best-of-three finals series in the Shakey’s V-League Season 11 Open Conference today at the Arena in San Juan.

The Lady Troopers beat the reigning champions in four sets  in last Thursday’s opener, highlighted by its defense that held  the Rising Suns to a finals low record of 5 points in the fourth set, 25-19, 18-25, 25-18, 25-5.

Game time is set at 2:45 p.m. with Army bracing for a fightback from a Suns team that swept all 16 of their games last season to take the title.

Cagayan Valley’s Aiza Maizo and Rosemarie Vargas have been dishing out solid games but the team hopes to draw the best from Pau Soriano, Wenneth Eulalio, Janine Marciano and Ma. Angeli Tabaquero, a key figure in Cagayan’s record sweep of the crown last year.

Jovelyn Gonzaga, the talented southpaw who broke into prominence after winning three straight beach volley titles, is on pace of snaring his second Finals MVP award after leading the Lady Troopers with a match-high 19 hits, including 13 kills and a whopping six blocks.  Rachel Daquis, who bagged the MVP honors in the conference, is also expected to be in her top form after a 12-hit effort in Game One.
