CEBU CITY, Philippines – The local government of Asturias in northwestern Cebu recently earned the ire of netizens after videos of impounded dogs allegedly neglected went viral online.
Videos and photos of unfed stray dogs where taken from a makeshift shelter in this locality.
According to the netizen who took the videos and photos, the dogs were rescued from the streets in pursuance of the local government’s dog care and anti-rabies ordinance.
The netizen, who refused to be named, said the dogs were abandoned in a secluded area all hungry and unattended.
The photos and videos that he shared showed around five to six stray dogs eating their own kind while at the shelter.
Another grim video showed three dead dogs being shared as a meal by the other canines.
Reporters reached out to Asturias Mayor Antonio Pintor on Wednesday, November 3, for his comments.
In a text message, Pintor said, their local government is currently addressing the issue with the help of the Department of Agriculture (DA).
Based on previous advisories posted on their official social media handles, the municipal government of Asturias passed the Asturias Dog Care and Anti-Rabies Ordinance last September 2.
As a result, dog owners were told to have their dogs registered to the town’s agriculture and veterinary office so they can avail anti-rabies shots for their pets.
Otherwise, stray dogs will be caught and impounded.
