CEBU CITY, Philippines — The Cebu City government is imposing a P500 fine for those who will be illegally littering on the streets.

Councilor Jerry Guardo said that they have to start imposing penalties because the city needs to finish the clearing operations after Typhoon Odette ravaged many streets with debris.

Some people have been throwing household garbage along the pile of debris causing the pile to increase uncontrollably, Guardo said.

“Ig human nakog clearing ana, ato dayon iposition atong personnel so kung kinsay maglabay, ato gyod ipenalize og P500,” said Guardo.

Barangay Environment Officers (BEO) and City Environment and Sanitation Enforcement Team (CESET) will be implementing the policy which is based on a city ordinance against littering.

Any resident caught throwing their garbage will be cited immediately.

Guardo appeals to residents not to throw their garbage at piles of debris because this will hamper the clearing of the roads.

The councilor said they target to finish clearing all major roads by New Year and afterwhich, secondary roads will follow.

“We need the help of everyone para mahuman ni, sa barangays, sa residents, tanan,” he said.

On December 28, 2021, the city completed the clearing at PC Hills in Barangay Busay, R. Duterte Street, and Banawa. /rcg
