MANILA, Philippines — Easterlies and the northeast monsoon, locally known as “amihan,” will bring light and isolated rains over the country, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) reported Sunday.

The northeast monsoon will cause cloudy skies with light rains over Cagayan Valley, Aurora, and Quezon.

Metro Manila, Ilocos Region, Cordillera Administrative Region, and the rest of Central Luzon and Calabarzon (Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal, Quezon) will have partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated light rains due to the same weather system.

Meanwhile, the rest of the country will experience partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rain showers or thunderstorms brought by the easterlies.

A gale warning is up in 15 areas in the country, Pagasa said.

“Sa ngayon, maraming lugar po sa ating bansa ang mayroong gale warning or banta ng matataas na alon,” weather specialist Benison Estareja said.

(Currently, many areas in our country have a gale warning or threat of high waves.)

The following areas may experience up to 4.5 meters of waves or equivalent to around one and a half floor of a building:

-Batanes

-Cagayan

-Isabela

-Ilocos Norte

-Ilocos Sur

-La Union

-Pangasinan

-southwestern coast of Occidental Mindoro

-southeastern coast of Oriental Mindoro

-western coast of Romblon

-Cuyo Islands

-Kalayaan Islands

-eastern coast of Calamian Islands

-northwestern coast of Aklan

-western coast of Antique

“‘Pag po mayroon tayong gale warning, pagbabawalan munang pumalaot ‘yung mga mangingisda at ‘yung may mga small sea vessels habang pinag-iingat ‘yung mga katamtaman hanggang sa malalaking mga sea vessels natin sa matataas na mga pag-alon dahil po ‘yan sa amihan,” Estareja said.

(When we have a gale warning, our fisherfolk and those with small sea vessels are prohibited to set sail while we caution medium to large sea vessels  from high waves due to the amihan.)
