The University of San Carlos (USC) gained a shot at the last semifinal seat in the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) football tournament after pulling off a 2-1 win over the University of the Visayas (UV) yesterday at the Cebu City Sports Center.

USC escaped the equally determined UV squad  to earn three points and improve to six overall for fourth place in the standings behind the University of Southern Philippines-Foundation (USP-F), University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) and the University of Cebu (UC), respectively.

USC can seal its semis seat with a win over USP-F early today at the same venue.

UV, which currently has four points, still has a slim chance of taking the last semis seat if it wins over USJ-R today and USC loses to USP-F.

But a tie is also possible if USC draws with USP-F and UV wins over USJ-R since a draw awards a team one point and a win is worth three points. In case of a tie, organizers will determine the last semifinalist via goal difference.

Already in the semis are USP-F (10 points), USJ-R (7) and UC (6).

Scoring for USC yesterday were Yves Caballero (53rd minute) and Christian Saguin (93rd). Pedro Diao scored for UV in the 60th minute.

In other games, UC and USJ-R played to a scoreless draw while USP-F won over the Don Bosco College,1-0, courtesy of Christian Millebo’s goal in the 81st minute via penalty kick.
