No uptown roads in Cebu City will be closed in Sunday’s four-hour road sharing experiment, organizers said yesterday.
Pedestrians and bikers will share the lanes with motor vehicles.
Architect Socorro Atega, executive director of the Cebu Uniting for Sustainable Water (CUSW), said they won’t obstruct intersections and will help ensure normal traffic flow in these areas during the activity from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m.
“We will follow traffic lights and we will put up tarpaulins to guide motorists and the participants,” said Marc Canton, lead convenor of the Movement for a Livable Cebu (MLC).
Organizers were scheduled to appear before the Cebu City Traffic Operations Management (Citom) board yesterday afternoon to present the road sharing route.
Canton said they need to secure permits for road use and the use of Fuente Osmeña circle for the closing ceremonies.
They were expected to secure the permits yesterday after Rama called on Citom to help the organizers secure the necessary government permits.
Magic rope
Atega and Canton were at City Hall yesterday morning to brief reporters on preparations for Sunday’s road sharing.
They later appeared in the Citom board meeting in the afternoon.
Canton said volunteers would start installing their “magic rope” referring to a 4,000 meter cordon that would separate the inner lanes of Gen. Maxilom Ave., Gorordo Ave., Escario St. and a portion of Osmeña Boulevard.
Normal flow
Under the road sharing scheme, the inner lane near the sidewalks will be used by pedestrians, people with disabilities (PWDs), cyclists and skaters.
The outer lane will be used for two-way vehicular traffic.
The cordons that spearate the lanes would be removed at 7 p.m. to allow normal flow of traffic starting 8 p.m., Canton said.
The four-kilometer route will traverse barangays Kamputhaw, Capitol Site, Sta. Cruz, Cogon Ramos and Zapatera, all in Cebu City.
Normal flow of traffic would be allowed on the outer lanes of the four identified roads, he said.
Atega said she will be meeting with drivers of Lahug-bound passenger jeepneys to explain the road sharing experiment.
“Everyone is invited,” Canton said.
The activity is adopting the theme: “Ang Kadalanan Para sa Tanan. Mag-angay ta sa D’an.”
Organizers will also set up zumba, dancing, yoga, and street art exhibits along certain points of the route. /With Correspondent Michelle Joy L. Padayhag
