What was supposed to be a night of merrymaking on Saturday to mark the fiesta in a barangay in Tuburan town in northern Cebu turned into a nightmare for villagers after their barangay captain was shot by his own nephew whom he tried to pacify for indiscriminately firing a gun.
The wounding of barangay captain Braullio Umandac, 64, marred the fiesta of barangay Amatugan.
Umandac was hit in the left leg after his nephew Joseph Umandac, 21 could not be stopped from creating trouble at around 9 p.m. Saturday and fired another shot.
PO2 Barry Empia of the Tuburan Police Station said Joseph was a known neighborhood toughie.
Barangay tanods rushed to the place where a dance was being held after the suspect, who was allegedly intoxicated, sparked tension by firing a gun.
Barangay tanods tried but failed to subdue the suspect prompting his uncle, the barangay captain, to intervene.
When the elder Umandac attempted to take his nephew into custody, the suspect pulled out a second gun and aimed it at the official.
The barangay chief managed to parry the gun, but he was still hit in the leg.
The elder Umandac was rushed to a hospital while his nephew was taken straight to police detention.
Police said they recovered one gun. They said they are still awaiting the barangay captain’s decision on whether to file charges of frustrated murder, but an illegal gun possession charge is set to be filed by the police.
