The Southwestern University Cobras celebrated a double championship yesterday after their women’s volleyball squad captured the Cesafi volleyball title with an emphatic, 25-21, 26-24, 26-24 victory over the University of San Carlos in Game 2 to sweep the series at the University of San Carlos gym.

Later in the evening, SWU crushed USC to win the men’s basketball title.

After winning the series opener last Saturday, 25-8, 25-20, 28-26, the Lady Cobras pulled out all the stops especially in the second set where they had to scramble late to tie the game at 24-all behind Marlyn Llagoso’s drop shot before eventually winning it all behind consecutive service aces from Janelle Cabahug.

In the third set, USC got to set point first but shot themselves in the foot with a net violation for a 24-all count. Cabahug and Florenel Rodriguez then put the game away with powerful kills to give SWU its second straight title.

SWU skipper Nerissa Villanueva was named as Most Valuable Player while Therese Ramas received Best Server honors. Llagoso went home with the Best Blocker award.

In the men’s division, SWU rallied from a two-set deficit to outlast USJ-R, 19-25, 23-25, 25-17, 28-26, 15-8. Dave Cabaron led the Spiking Cobras fight from two sets down with his incredible spiking while getting help from Rommel Pepito who batted down the hatches on defense for SWU.

The deciding Game 3 will be played tomorrow.
