CEBU CITY, Philippines — A total of 44 shooting incidents were recorded in Cebu City from January 1 to June 19, 2022.
According to Police Lieutenant Colonel Maria Theresa Macatangay, CCPO information officer, of the 44 shooting incidents, 16 were cleared, 18 were solved, while there are still 10 cases that remain under investigation.
A case is considered cleared if the suspect has been identified and a criminal complaint has been filed against the person. But no arrested has been made yet.
Meanwhile, a case is considered solved if police have arrested the suspect and the crime complaint has also been filed.
Of the said incidents, Macatangay said that 34 were murder offenses, one attempted homicide, 13 frustrated murder, one for less serious physical injuries, and five for serious physical injuries.
Macatangay said that most of the shooting incidents were due to personal grudge. Some were due to altercations stemmed from conflicts on illegal drug proceeds.
“Most of the shooting incidents that were recorded here kay naa gyud panagbikil sa ilang assailant,” she said.
She added that most of the firearms used from these shooting incidents were unlicensed.
Macatangay said this is a cause of alarm for the police.
“Every crime in our city is a cause for alarm for the police. We cannot also downplay this one because if we say there is an average of seven incidents per month, we really need to give attention to this particular incident,”she said.
“When naa man guy shooting incident, ang implication ana adunay loose firearms sa gawas. It might be used to perpetrate other crimes,” she added.
Macatangay appeals to the public to help them report individuals possessing loose firearms. This way, they will be able to deter possible commission of lawless actions in the city.
She added that the presence of loose firearms has contributed to the crimes that transpired in the city.
As part of their campaign against criminality, the CCPO conduct Operation Katok, a program that aids them in recovering firearms, especially those with expired permits.
Those who are listed in the police database as those with firearm licenses that are expired will be sent request for renewal letters.
