Kid cancer survivors go ‘Trick or Treating’

Angel Lyka Carpela had been battling cancer for more than half of her life.

At five years old, she had several chemotherapy sessions to combat her Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) which started when she was still two years old.

Yesterday, Lyka had reason to smile as she joined child cancer survivors and the children and grandchildren of Cebu City Hall’s employees for their annual Trick or Treat event.

“We brought her here today so she can also enjoy. Although it’s not good for her to eat too much chocolates and candies, I’m giving an exception today,” Lyka’s mother Jamaica said.

Her cancer is currently in remission and she would finish her therapy by April or May next year. Yesterday’s Trick or Treat event is on its third year.

Dr. Ester Concha, chief of the Department of Social Welfare and Services (DSWS) said they wanted the child cancer survivors “to freely interact with the children and grandchildren.”
