Organizers aiming for smooth City Olympics

The Cebu City government and the Cebu City division of the Department of Education (DepEd) are doing everything to make sure the 24th Cebu City Olympics will run smoothly starting this weekend at the Cebu City Sports Complex.

DepEd Cebu City division sports coordinator Zenaida Gocotano said the Cebu City government is shelling out P5 million for the two weekend meet that will also be held in various sporting venues around the city.

Last year, the Cebu City Olympics was derailed because of supertyphoon Yolanda, which hit the Visayan region.

“It (supertyphoon Yolanda) affected our plans badly last year so this year, we are working hard to organize a smooth City Olympics in preparation for the Central Visayas Regional Athletics Association (CVIRAA) meet,” Gocotano said.

Winners in this multi-sporting meet will make up the Cebu City Niños that will compete in the CVIRAA.

Last year,  the University of San Carlos (USC) Warriors made up the core of the Cebu City Niños after topping the Cebu City Olympics. The Niños are the defending champion of the CVIRAA.

Meanwhile, due to big changes that will be applied by DepEd in next year’s CVIRAA and Palarong Pambansa, the City Olympics will also have to undergo some changes to adapt to the new system.

Gocotano said the changes will be announced  tomorrow during the official launching of the meet at the DepEd Cebu City Office.
