Former congressman Pastor Alcover Jr. of the Alliance for Nationalism and Democracy (ANAD) Party-List surrendered to the Cebu City court yesterday and posted bail for a libel case filed by a former Bureau of Customs district collector.
Alcover paid a cash bond of P10,000 to the Regional Trial Court to secure temporary liberty pending resolution of the case.
RTC Judge Ma. Lynna Adviento of Branch 58 signed Alcover’s release order.
The case stemmed from the complaint filed by former Bureau of Customs district collector David S. Odilao Jr. who accused Alcover of destroying his reputation through the media.
In his complaint, Odilao cited an article that appeared in Sun.Star Daily, quoting Alcover as saying that he took money from the political enemies of Alcover.
In the story, Alcover said Odilao, a third nominee in the Anad partylist, took money from the their rivals including Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte.
Odilao said he was disheartened by the allegations and denied that he pocketed money from political groups.
He impleaded in his complaint the reporter and editor of the newspaper but was dismissed by the prosecutor.
