Cebuano filmmakers to hold short film festival on Nov. 28-30

lilas binisayaCebuano film-making will be highlighted in a festival on November 28 to 30 at the Cine Oriente along Colon Street.

The event dubbed Lilas Binisaya (Visayan Movies) Film Festival aims to showcase the best short films in Cebu.

Cine Oriente was chosen as the venue  because it used to be the center of Cebuano films.

Festival Director Maria Victoria Beltran said 15 short films will be featured.

“We want to promote and develop  Cebuano film culture,” Beltran said at the 888 News Forum yesterday.

The creator  of the winning film will get  P10,000 and a one-year scholarship worth $5,000 at the Film and Media Arts Conservatory (FMAC) in Cebu.

The winner will be qualified to compete  in the seventh Cinema Rehiyon Film Festival in Cebu City in August next year.

The festival is organized by Lilas Binisaya Inc. and Hambin Inc., in cooperation with the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA), Cebu City Government, and the Province of Cebu.

Screening of the 1960s film “Manok ni San Pedro” which stars radio personality and Provincial Board Member Julian “Teban” Daan is set at 6:30 p.m. on the  opening day, November 28.

Screening of the competition entries will be from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, November 29.

Award-winning short films will also be screened on the second day, including “To Siomai Love,” “Doktora,” and “Saranghae, My Tutor.”

Aspiring filmmakers can also participate in a workshop on “How to Pitch for a Full-Length Film Grant”.

This session will  be facilitated by director and writer Emmanuel de la Cruz at the Eduardo Aboitiz Development Studies Center (EADSC) along Lopez Jaena Street.

Suzette Ranillo, daughter of veteran Visayan actors Gloria Sevilla and Matt Ranillo Jr., will also conduct an acting workshop from 9 a.m. to 12 noon. on Nov. 29.

The awarding ceremony will be on November 30, Sunday.

Beltran urged the Cebuano audience to come and support the festival.

Admission is free.
