Lawyer Augusto W. Go, founder of the University of Cebu (UC), celebrated his 80th birthday last Oct 11 in a grand fashion at the grand ballroom of the Waterfront Cebu City Hotel and Casino.
At the same time, it was also a celebration of UC’s 50th anniversary.
The occasion brought together Cebu’s luminaries in government and politics, business, society, and the church as well as his former classmates in law school, the pioneer batch of UC graduates and academic staff. It was a celebration among friends.
Go, who built an empire over the years ranging from a university to banks, real estate, insurance, auto dealership and soon a hospital, not only shared how he built this. Saying all his successes would not have been possible without God’s will, he paid forward by giving out a total of P8M to four institutions.
His only daughter, Candice, however said that “the greatest contribution of my father is in the lives he touched.” She was particularly referring to students from the masses who were able to obtain a college degree, improved their lives and contributed to the country’s economy.
