Globe  Telecom has come up with a cool way to encourage cellphone users to dispose of their old phones properly and at the same time raise funds for Yolanda victims.

The company is collecting old unused cellphones and broken cellphones.  Those who turn over their old gadgets can get one  entry for a chance to win an iPad  Air which will be raffled on Dec. 11.

Used phones can be dropped in any Globe store.

Project 1 Phone is designed to create awareness about  proper e-waste disposal and to promote sustainability.

Obsolete and unwanted electronic, electrical devices and batteries add up to millions of metric tons of e-waste disposed worldwide every year.  The waste releases  toxic metals such as lead, mercury, cadmium, and beryllium  in the air and seeps into the ground and waterways.

The collected gadgets will be brought to a recycling company based in Singapore. Proceeds from the recycling will be donated to Habitat for Humanity.

According to Yolly Crisanto, Globe’s senior vice president for corporate communications, the company will help build homes in Aklan province in  partnership with Habitat.

“Globe is not only dedicated to growing its business but is also committed to addressing environmental concerns and promoting human health amidst the fast growth of this high-tech industry.  Being a communication provider, Globe takes responsibility in educating the people on how to dispose of their old mobile devices and computers as well as end-of-life battery packs and chargers in the best way possible,” Crisanto said during the Globe-BPI media appreciation party yesterday.

Organizations or companies that need Globe to pick-up their e-waste in bulk may  contact mobile phone number 0917-5882463.

One may also donate his/her  Globe Rewards points by keying-in donate<space>habitat<space>amount and sending it to 4438.
