Pido Jarencio has been removed as head coach of the GlobalPort Batang Pier, a team that has struggled to pick up wins despite having a promising lineup.
There had been rumors that Jarencio, who was hired last January and signed a two-year contract, was on the way out after the Batang Pier got off to a slow start in the ongoing 40th PBA Philippine Cup.
Hopes were high for the Batang Pier going into the season after they were able to acquire Stanley Pringle as the number one overall pick in the Rookie Draft.
But GlobalPort could only win four of its first nine games and is on a two-game losing streak in the current tournament.
According to InterAksyon.com, Jarencio will still be a part of the team as consultant.
Assistant coach Eric Gonzales will serve as head coach on an interim basis.
According to the report, the shake-up was confirmed by Bonnie Tan, who replaced BJ Manalo as team manager.
Meanwhile, the Alaska Aces and the San Miguel Beermen gun for solo leadership when they play separate opponents today at the Araneta Coliseum.
The Aces tackled the NLEX Road Warriors in the first game, while the Beermen collide with the Meralco Bolts in the nightcap.
San Miguel and Alaska are tied at the number spot with similar 7-1 (win-loss) cards. The two teams are looking to bolster their chances of earning an outright semifinal seats.
The top two teams after the elimination round will advance to the semis outright.
The Bolts are at seventh spot with an even 4-4 record, while the Road Warriors occupy the ninth place with a 3-5 record.
