CEBU CITY, Philippines – Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama said he wants all employees of the city government to undergo a lifestyle check.

During the flag-raising ceremony at Plaza Sugbo on Monday, December 12, Rama reminded City Hall employees not to get consumed with opulence.

He proposed a lifestyle check among the city government’s over 3,000 workers soon.

“I will be pursuing a lifestyle checking but not this time,” Rama said.

“Do not be enslaved with worth. Don’t be enslaved by inheritance. Do not be claiming for opulence even if it’s yours. Samot gyud if dili inyo. It will create power and power corrupts. Absolute power corrupts absolutely,” he added.

According to the mayor, he intends to have a “lifestyle presentation” wherein City Hall workers’ properties and other valuables will be displayed on a screen.

“We will have a lifestyle presentation… And basin masakpan mo. Basin taod-taod ibalhin na inyong balay,” he said.

On the other hand, Rama once again defended his administration’s proposal to allocate P50 billion in public funds as the city’s budget for next year.

He justified their decision to revise real property taxes as one of their sources in sustaining the P50 billion budget which, if approved, will be the biggest in Cebu City’s history.
