Cebu City had zero casualties after typhoon Ruby but the City Council still declared the city under a state of calamity after close to P40 million worth of crops and livestock in upland barangays were reported damaged.
The basis for the declaration was a rapid assessment conducted by the City Agriculture Department.
Councilor Dave Tumulak said the city still has around P9 million left in its calamity fund.
City Agriculturist Joey Baclayon said 314.75 hectares of crops worth P36 million in 21 upland barangays were damaged, mostly high value crops, and local vegetables, flowers, mangoes and bananas.
These barangays include Malubog, Sirao, Taptap, Adlaon, Binaliw, Agsungot, Mabini, Paril, Guba, Lusaran, Tagbao, Bonbon, Pung-ol Sibugay, Sudlon I, Sudlon II, Sinsin, Tabunan, Kalunasan, Sapangdaku, Pamutan and Toong.
A total of 89 heads of livestock, including goats, cattle, poultry native and fighting cocks, were killed in barangays Taptap, Malubog, Cambinocot and Sudlon I.
About P2.25 million worth of high value and common vegetables were also reported damaged by typhoon Queenie llast month.
Meanwhile, power has been restored in most of the 12 northern Cebu towns . In San Remegio, Compostela, Carmen, Catmon, Sogod, Borbon, Tabogon and Danao City, power suppply was restored as early as Monday afternoon.
“I have been informed by Cebeco (Cebu Electric Cooperative) that power lines along the highway in the northern municipalities damaged by typhoon Ruby have been re-energized,” said Gov. HIlario Davide III.
In Bantayan Island, all towns have power restored except for barangay Guiwanon in Bantayan town. However, residents living in three islets off Bantayan will have to wait for a few more days to have their power back, said Riza Gigante of the Bantayan Electric Cooperative (Banelco). The blackout will continue in the islands of Lipayran, Kinatarkan and Hilantagaan since cables that connect to these areas were cut off, she said.
