No witnesses, no evidence, no financial help.
As the last of the four fatalities in the digging in sitio Pasil, barangay Dumlog, Danao City is laid to rest today, the family of Diomel Mayol has yet to get aid for his burial expenses.
Mayol was only asked by his mother to help their three neighbors who fell first into the deadly pit last Dec. 26, but he also slipped on a rock and died with them.
Dumlog barangay captain Isidro “Adong” Toledo said that the other three victims – Ernesto Ogabao, Jess Christian Miguel, and Amick Bunconseho – were already buried before 2014 ended.
“The Ogabao family said that they will try their best to extend assistance to Mayol’s family,” said Toledo, adding that until now the victim’s family has yet to get any.
The pit is in the backyard of the Ogabao family, who had claimed that they were digging for a well as their water source. Teresita, the wife of Ernesto, had denied claims that it was a treasure hunting activity.
The barangay captain said they have yet to determine who could be behind the suspected treasure hunting activity. PO3 Marlon Remollo also said that until now they have no evidence or witnesses to support the treasure hunting allegations.
“It’s hard to establish the case,” he said, although the case is not yet closed. “We still have to wait for the assessment of other government agencies.”
The city’s environment office inspected the site last Saturday, but Toledo is still awaiting instructions on what to do with the pit.
