A whopping P500,000 in cash await the winning runners in the fifth installment of one of the biggest foot races in Cebu, the SM2SM Run slated on Feb. 22 at the SM City Cebu.

SM Prime Holdings Inc., the organizer of the cash-rich race, has made the 21-kilometer race even more exciting this year by increasing the prize money for the top male and female finishers to P60,000 up from P50,000 the previous years.

The 2nd to 10th placers in the 21k and the shorter 12k and 6k distances can also expect a windfall this year.

The 21k race will have its turning point in the soon to open SM Sea Side City at the South Road Properties and the San Pedro Calungsod chapel.

The SM2SM Run is one of a few local races that separate local and foreign runners as its way of supporting the local runners.

“It’s our thrust to concentrate on local athletes. We are not making champions out of them but we are trying to propagate healthy living and active lifestyle that’s why we separate them from the foreign runners to give them a bigger chance of winning since foreigners have been dominating local races,” said SM Prime Holdings Inc. Vice President Marissa Fernan during yesterday’s race launching at Radisson Blu Hotel.

Fernan was joined by race endorsers Liloan Mayor Duke Frasco and Nia Aldeguer, who are into triathlon and long distance running, Margette Villarica and race director Joel Baring of Sports and Fitness Enthusiasts (Safe).

SM2SM Run endorsers are chosen for espousing an active and healthy lifestyle.

The Cebu Newsworkers Foundation Inc., the Cebu City Task Force on Street Children and the SM Cares Village in Bogo City are the event’s beneficiaries.

Registration is going on at the upper ground floor of SM City Cebu and Sports Avenue near Sunburst. Registration fee is pegged at P750 for the 21k, P600 for the 12k and P400 for the 6k and 3k inclusive of the race shirt, refreshments and goodies.

The 21k finishers on the other hand, will receive a specially designed medal.
