MANDAUE City traffic authorities is no longer allowing tricycles from passing through major roads and will crack down on colorum operation in the city.
Edwin Ermac, director of the Traffic Enforcement Agency of Mandaue (TEAM), said the twin measures were rolled out last Thursday. He said they decided to enforce the ban after the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) reported to City Hall that these three-wheeled vehicles contributed to the traffic problem in the city.
Ermac said they will enforce a city ordinance passed two years ago which imposes a P7,000 fine on colorum operators. He said they deferred the implementation of the fine as it was deemed exorbitant and stuck to the old P500 fine.
Colorum operators however, took advantage of the leniency and continued operating at will, he said. There are around 7,000 tricycles plying Mandaue’s streets, of which only 3,000 are registered.
Ermac said Mayor Jonas Cortes has expressed concern for the tricycle drivers who will be left jobless and is planning to offer an alternative livelihood for them.
