A parcel which was suspected to contain cocaine weighing 57.2 grams was seized at the Mactan-Cebu International Airport.
The parcel arrived at the airport last Dec. 11. It was sent through Federal Express by a certain Kevin Pillez of 1523 West Polk, Chicago, Illinois in the United States, said Gerardo Campo, acting Port Collector of the Bureau of Custom’s Sub-port of Mactan.
Listed as consignee was a certain Jonah Oliverio of V. Ranudo Street in Cebu City. Campo said the sender declared that the package contained sunglasses.
Campo said Customs examiner, Roy Gonzaga became suspicious because the package was unusually heavy.
Campo said they waited for the consignee to claim the package but no one showed up to collect the package.
Customs officers decided to open the box on Jan. 9. The cocaine was found inside a chips container.
Upon examination, the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency in Central Visayas confirmed that the substance was cocaine with an estimated value of P250,000, said Campo.
The Customs had issued Warrants of Seizure and Detection (WSD). The confiscated illegal drugs were turned over to the PDEA-7 yesterday. Campo said charges could be filed against Campo if it will be proven that he had a hand in the foiled attempt to smuggle the contraband.
